  1. OK, so *obviously* we need tee shirts to wear while we shoot. I suggest the vertical logo (left- and right-most pix above), with a choice of white-on-black and vice-versa. Quickly please! :-P

(And maybe buttons for the more timid and impoverished… ;-)

Also, now that the UK is covered, we need card versions for the States, Canada, and Oz…get cracking!

    Thanks guys,

Not yet been stopped in London, but it’s always on my mind when shooting on the streets. I’ve added the ‘bust’ card to my regular cards I use to show any members of the public who object to having their picture taken (better than trying to ‘sneak’ shots). A worthwhile campaign, and one which I fully support. I hope now the Met have issued guidelines that the cases of innocents getting stopped will fall off. Optimistic? perhaps.

Excellent idea and campaign. Waiting eagerly for the T-shirts.

Just a small request, could the logo cards used at the launch be made available for download as a graphic or .pdf file please?

    K.

  4. Wow…OK, that was fast. (Ain’t the net wunnerful?)

When you have time…white print on black pls? (An easy reversal in Photoshop, and so MUCH more slimming… ;-)

FWIW, you’ve inspired me to put together a list of links to photographers’ legal rights in various countries (many of us shoot around the planet). See it here: http://galenaalysoncanada.blogspot.com/2009/08/42-im-photographer-not-terrorist.html ; and please do send me links to pages I’m missing, thanks!

    • Sadly it’s not as easy as inverting the colours in Photoshop. Spreadshirt can’t print the design on dark fabrics because it’s quite a complex design it can only be printed onto items using a digital transfer. We are working with Spreadshirt to get a less complex design made for their other printing processes.

Have you seen the Photo-Forum Know your Rights video? It concentrates a bit more on the extra protection and police guidance for journalists but a lot of other relevant laws are discussed.

Well done guys for taking the initiative on this one – we’ve all moaned before and done nothing about it… thanks…

  6. Gill Avila says:

It would be fun to organize “flash mobs” who converge at a given place and start running around and clicking away. That would totally overwhelm any cops who would be around, and would serve notice to authorities that THEY serve the people and WE make the rules.

  7. Is a novel idea but who will be the first photographer to wear a tshirt while getting in the Tube/train/bus/metro or a plane. Just hope that you are not heading to cover a world crisis, a huge editorial or commercial shoot while catching the only plane heading that way.

I can see quite a few nervous pointing fingers while dialing those mobiles or searching for security…”Orange alert, red alert..terrorist in sight.”

Security: Sir/ma’am you must come with us (“US” 30 security and police officers with machine guns) You are a national threat to all these passengers and the this terminal/airport. We got more than 60 phone calls already.
So we need to check out your camera gears and all your fancy tools in there. That Apple lap top needs to be check out too. That is a real mac.”

Photographer: Listen I am just a nice photographer trying to show the world that we do have a job to do. This is our right and freedom of expression. Go after the real terrorist… or Even those nasty paparazzi.. But us nice and friendly photographers leave us alone..

Security: Like I said you MUST COME WITH US NOW OR WE WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY. And I mean NOW!!

Photographer: OK now that we are in this isolated room with one small window do you want me to take all my clothes off…OK that is a NOOO.
OK let me show you my camera gears. This is a Pocket Wizards.. WOW!! chill out.. don’t point those guns at me. PLEASE put them away. This is not a remote trigger… I mean is a trigger and is remote but not what you think.. Gosh, I better call my attorney.. What the hell I see my plane leaving now..

  8. The card is a great idea, always assuming that

    1. PC Plod can read

    2. PC Plod even gives a s**t, and isn’t just bumping up his arrest stats by selecting easy targets

Oops! There I go showing my terrorist tendencies by using the word target. I’d better calm down and go and shoot some photos…… Oops, yet again!

  9. Nick Black says:

I remember having a letter published in the national press on this problem when the legislation was put through. I said then that it was only a matter of time before some poor sod with a backpack and a digital ended up being detained and threatened with God knows what.

I hate to say I told you so, but…..!!

It’s time Comrade Brown and his Stalinist henchmen were condemned to history.

  10. What a great website, very informative to those of us whom photography is a passion, i have bookmarked this place and will return often.

Keep up the good work =o)

    IMPROPER PHOTOGRAPHY OR VISUAL RECORDING.
    http://penalcode.austintexascriminaldefense.com/21.15.html

this Penal COSE should be overturned!!!

basically it give the law the right to arrest anyone taking photos since there is NO WAY to show intent!

A person commits an offense if the person:
    (1) photographs or by videotape or other electronic means visually records another:
    (A) without the other person’s consent; and
    (B) with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person; or
